How Substitutions Work

Feature Overview

What is the expected behavior of this feature?

  • Substitutions don't mean that the exact substitution will be substituted.
  • There is a pool of exercises that the substitution will come from.
  • For some context, substitutions work by targeting a specific exercise (ex. squat) and replacing it with the intended substitute exercise (ex. plank).  However, the way we generate a member’s ET Session Config (playlist) is by selecting from a large pool of exercises.
    • This means that there’s no guarantee that our target exercise of squat will be selected for a given playlist, so there’s no guarantee our substitution of plank being included.  All of that said, it’s not expected that just because a Substitute exercise is created that it will be present in every playlist.
